Air Conditioning Systems
When considering installing a new or replacing an existing cooling system, capacity of the system and the energy efficiency of the system are the two essential items to be considered. Each building is unique, requiring different solutions, and one of Apex’s team will be glad to help you determine which system meets your needs. A system that is too small will be unable to keep your building at the ideal temperature. But a system that is too large will cost more to purchase and operate, and will be less comfortable than a properly sized system.
Apex Air will help you determine the capacity of your A/C system, but we first must know what your comfort goals are.
The industry standard for determining the capacity needed for the Southeast Louisiana climate is to maintain an inside temperature of 75 degrees, when the outside temperature is 100 degrees. Your particular preference may vary. Units do this by removing the necessary amount of heat (BTUs) from your building’s air.
A/C units range in capacity from 1.5 ton systems, which can remove about 18,000 BTUs per hour, to 5 ton systems, equipped to remove about 60,000 BTUs per hour.
An equally important consideration is how much energy your system requires to remove those BTUs.
Ductless Mini-Split
When considering the many options for heating and cooling, you should think about whether a mini-split system might be right for your comfort needs. Most people in the US are not yet familiar with this kind of system, but it is the dominant choice in the world market, which was first introduced about 30 years ago. A mini-split is an appealing alternative to a window or a through-the-wall unit, used to condition a specific space, or an alternative to central air conditioning. A mini-split system consists of an indoor unit that houses the blower, typically mounted 7.5-8.5 feet above the floor, which is piped to a condensing unit on the outside of the building. Configurations vary, allowing from one to eight indoor units per outdoor unit.
Mini-splits are much less obtrusive, quieter, and more energy efficient than a window or through-the-wall space heating and cooling option. Plus, they are vastly more energy efficient than central systems. Their energy efficiency ratings are significantly higher and mini-splits eliminate duct loss, a severe energy liability for central systems. Mini-split systems come in a range of sizes and configurations. Each building is unique, requiring different solutions, and one of Apex’s experienced ‘Whole House’ Experts will be glad to help you determine which system meets your needs.
Furnaces
Everyone knows that furnaces heat buildings, but few realize that they are also needed to cool buildings well. That is why it is especially important to understand what a furnace consists of, and how these parts work together to meet your heating and cooling needs. Apex Air thinks its smarter to evaluate your building’s needs by using an overall structure approach. The Apex team will be glad to help you determine which furnace is right for you.
Furnaces use natural gas or propane burners to heat your building. These burners occupy the top half of the furnace. The bottom half is the blower which distributes heated or cooled air throughout your building. When considering installing a new or replacing your existing furnace, the burner capacity, blower capacity, and energy efficiency are the three most important items to be considered.
Heat Pumps
In our climate, if you are constructing or have an existing all-electric building or an electric building with propane, using a heat pump is the most economic choice to meet your comfort goals. A heat pump system costs roughly 50% less to operate than an all-electric heating and cooling system, and about 33% less to operate than propane heating with an electric cooling system.
When considering installing a new heat pump, capacity of the system and the energy efficiency of the system are the two essential items to be considered. Each building is unique, requiring different solutions, and one of Apex’s technicians will be glad to help you determine which system meets your needs. When propane is available, a propane furnace in combination with a heat pump is the preferred choice. If natural gas is available, a gas furnace with electric A/C is the preferred choice.
